JANUARY '10 - Hai! Karate on cbbc iplayer
Hai! Karate - Journey to Japan offers
four children and four parents the chance to
swap the stresses and strains of life in
modern-day Britain for three weeks in Japan,
being taught the traditional martial art of
karate by the best teachers in the world.
Forcing them to work together, will this
experience enrich their minds, bodies and
souls - and could it even improve their
relationships?
On their journey they will be immersed in
the culture and traditions of both ancient
and modern Japan and face gruelling
challenges that will test their commitment
and fighting spirit. They have just three
weeks to gain their first belt, something
that would normally take three months. Those
who succeed will be given the privilege to
perform at the World Karate Tournament in
Okinawa.
The families travel to Japan and arrive
in Kyoto City where they stay in a
traditional Japanese inn for the first time
and meet their teachers. But how will they
cope with their very first karate challenge?
Jonathan Ross narrates.

23rd JUNE
'09 - New adult kickboxing grading syllabus
New adult
kickboxing grading syllabus
We have decided redraft the
syllabus to place the emphasis on learning
the basics rather than the combinations. The
new syllabus shows 9 Basics per grade which
students will need to concentrate to pass
the grading test. It also includes 40
coaching points, which we have identified as
the most common points that are covered in
class, that are essential for progress in
kickboxing
New grading process
To make the grading process more ’inclusive’
it will now be undertaken over a two week
period. The first week will be showing the
basics on pads during a regular class. You
will be assessed during this time to see if
you have learnt the material sufficiently to
progress to the next stage. You will
notified by text (make sure your instructor
has your number) if you have been
successful. If unsuccessful you can try
again during this week, otherwise you can
try again in November.
So on to week
two and the final part of the grading
assessment. The test
involves applying the basics in combinations
applied to focus pads with movement in a
freestyle manner. Also sparring for
intermediate and advanced levels. These can
include basic moves from your current grade
or previous grades. Finally, you will then
be required to demonstrate your fitness. You
will be notified by text if you have been
successful and the belts and certificates
will be awarded in class the following week.
We will also provide you with the
assessment sheets as feedback, because they
will be an accurate record of your strengths
and weaknesses, so that you can improve your
game for the next grading.
Access to information
To help you with the transition to the new
syllabus we will provide you with a printed
copy, available by Monday 29th July, so that
everyone has the coaching assessment points
and grading basics information. We also go
through the grading points with you in
class, so you get used to the terminology an
application of the moves.
